Derby Rules


  1. Derby Dates:  June 24, 2023, 12:00:00am – Sunday August 6, 2023, 11:59:59pm.
  2. All registration forms must be legible, completed, signed, and dated by contestant to be considered valid.  The Derby reserves the right to refuse any registration.  Everyone on board a vessel, must be registered in the Derby.  Participants may use charter services if the captain and mates are also registered.  There are no age restrictions.  Entry form must be cosigned by parent/guardian if the participant is under the age of 18.  All participants are subject to the same rules regardless of age.
  3. Winning walleye will be determined by weight.  Length (to the nearest ¼ inch) will also be recorded and used as a tiebreaker. If a tie still exists, place will be determined by the walleye that was weighed in first by date and time.
  4. All walleye must be caught legally using rod & reel by registered participant.  All participants must have a valid New York fishing license (unless when exempt by law) and must be caught in accordance with all fishing laws and regulations.  A participant weighing in a walleye, owns and is fully responsible for that walleye.  Walleye must not show any signs of being altered or contain any foreign materials or it will be disqualified. (If walleye is weighed in at another event, gill clip or other similar tag will be accepted if there is proof that the alteration was done by one of the event staff. Provide weight slip as proof participation.)
  5. Walleye must be caught in New York Waters of Lake Erie & Upper Niagara River.  
  6. Only (1) walleye allowed per participant to be registered at one time. Only (1) walleye will be ranked per participant. Only (1) ranking position can be held on the leaderboard at a time. A heavier walleye will bump entrants lower weighing walleye. 
  7. Weigh station hours to be determined by each individual location. No after-hours weigh-ins will be allowed. Participants must weigh walleye when weigh in station is available to the public.  All employees, family members, or anyone with direct affiliation with a weigh station remain eligible to participate but must weigh in at an alternate weigh station to maintain integrity.
  8. Derby place winners, along with all parties on board of vessel at the time the walleye was caught, may be subject to polygraph/lie detector testing.  Participants must agree to test and arrive at scheduled polygraph appointment, or they are subject to disqualification. Participants that are determined to be unfit to test (by the determination of the polygraphist) will be disqualified.  A contestant will be disqualified and removed from the final results after failing polygraph test, written results of failure will be given to contestant.
  9. A contestant can be disqualified for rules violations, state game law violations and/or boat law violations within the derby dates.
  10. Participant agrees to keep preserve their walleye in its original state until it drops below 4th place on the leader board and agrees that all walleye in contention, as determined by the sole discretion of the Derby, are property of the Derby until released by the Derby. All weighed walleye will be gill clipped by weigh master. It is the sole responsibility of the entrant to retain any walleye for prize consideration until the Derby results are declared official.  Failure to do so could result in disqualification.
  11. Participants agrees that award recipients are responsible for payment of all taxes on prizes $600 and more. Refusal to submit proper Social Security information will result in disqualification. Entrant who enters a prize-winning walleye will be the sole recipient of the cash or merchandise awards. Must be 18 years or older to claim cash prizes. A parent or legal guardian can claim prizes for participants under 18 years of age.
  12. Participant agrees that all decisions of the Derby will be final and not reviewable in any form. Also agrees to hold the Derby organizers, officials, sponsors, agents and/or employees, harmless from any liability of any nature, including injuries or damages of any kind suffered by or caused by any entrant during the period of the Derby.
